These new works are an exciting addition to Carter's artistic exploration, presented in a limited edition of 25. Each piece in this series is uniquely handcrafted, all are related but no two are alike.
Arriving as a meticulously crafted book, each edition contains 6 individual ink drawings and 1 striking sculpture - showcasing the artist's dedication and long involvement with sculpture making, drawing and design.
A highlight of this series is the transformation of a silver Eisenhower Dollar, minted in the US between 1971 and 1978. Carter has given each coin a remarkable makeover, carving and drawing into the metal, while adorning the reverse with abstract painting. This process reflects his deep-seated love of drawing, portraiture, history and the transformation of familiar objects, in this case the hefty one dollar coin. Outwardly, these new works are presented by the artist in the form of one of our oldest and useful objects that we use to disseminate knowledge, archive information and house artworks; the book.
By drawing from a reservoir of familiar imagery found in his extensive archive, alongside the creation of new works specifically for this project, Carter seamlessly merges sculpture, drawing, and bookmaking. These new works encapsulate the myriad interests that have informed his artistic journey over several decades, inviting viewers to explore the depth and complexity of his dense and involved studio life, and to own a piece from his passionate practice.
